The Apostle Paul was trying to explain why his preaching wasn’t eloquent.

It was on purpose.

1 Corinthians 2:2-5

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,
but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,

so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

He didn’t say he was unprepard

Paul just said that he “resolved” not to try and put “polish” on the news about Jesus.

Sometimes I think it actually takes more effort to tell the story of Jesus in a simple way because we naturally want to explain, emphasize and mix in our opinion.

Instead, we need to remember that the power is NOT in our words, but in the message itself.  Then, that message is used by the Holy Spirit to open someone’s eyes.

It’s God’s Power

That’s really where Paul is going with these verses.  It’s not us.  It’s not our style.  It’s not our brillance.  We don’t save anybody.

  • Yes, be prepared.
  • Yes, be engaging.
  • Yes, be honest.

But, above all, Keep it Simple and then step back and watch a demonstration of the Spirit’s power as the Word takes root and lives are transformed!
